Recipe: Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream

My husband and I bought an ice cream two years ago, made ice cream on the 4th of July, and haven't used it since. This weekend, I made ice cream with my sister-in-law, and we were surprised at how easy is was. Why did we put the machine away for so long? We'll have to do this more often.

Ingredients:
2 c. whole milk
1 c. heavy cream
1/2 c. sugar
2 tsp. vanilla

In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients.

Follow your ice cream machine's instructions to make ice cream.

After the ice cream is done, put it in the freezer for at least 30 minutes to harden up a little. Then remove and serve. The great thing about vanilla ice cream is that it's a nice blank canvas to add mix-ins. Berries are great this time of year; we used blackberries.

Homemade ice cream can be stored in the freezer for 1 to 2 weeks before it starts to lose its flavor. It's unlikely it will last that long anyway!
